Welcome to Waterford Castle
Come to the water's edge and The Island's ferry waits to take
you across a channel of centuries, back in time to an age you
thought now belonged only in books. Forget the present, and the
past comes alive. Here is both retreat and refuge, sanctuary
and seclusion.
Located 2 miles from Waterford City is uniquely situated on its'
own private 310 acre island on the River Suir, surrounded by
woodlands and an 18 hole championship golf course.
Take the road through a tree-lined driveway, where over a thousand
years ago the first inhabitants cut out a rough track to their
secure settlement. To know The Island is to watch the seasons
unfold along this driveway of greens and reds and purples.
Ahead stands the Castle, proud and immense, its corners folded
back in cloud-grey coloured stone.
Eight hundred years have passed since Maurice Fitzgerald constructed
a Norman Keep on the Island. The Island remained in the hands
of the Fitzgerald family until 1958. Today it has become the
site for one of the world's great hotels.
Pass through a carved granite arch and studded oak doors. Delicate
tapestries hang high above you, but dominating all is the cavernous
fireplace.
On the chimney breast, raised proud from the stone like some
giant ornate jewel, is the Fitzgerald coat of arms, its intricacies
and embellishments carved in stone, then reproduced in vivid
colours on the hand-woven carpet at your feet.
